 | Toko Ohmori is an acclaimed Japanese painter and illustrator whose work has gained international recognition. She studied oil and representational painting at Tokyo Zokei Univerity, where
she earned her degree. As an illustrator, Toko mixes her painterly technique and drawing skills with elements of graphic design to convey modernity and timelessness in a mix of fantasy and representation.
Toko’s portraits hint at the intangible. Themes of ennui, listlessness, and displacement prevail. Her portraits are, in many ways, social commentaries, often exploring Toko’s favorite topics, conflicts in identity between womanhood and being a little girl. A true product of her time, Toko
manipulates her artwork with her computer but let’s the emotive aspect of each piece prevail.
Elle, WWD Japan, and MDN are some of the various magazines to feature Toko’s work. She has also been widely published and recognized in books such as Taschen’s New Edition of Best Illustrators 2007, 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide (2007), The Age of Feminine Drawing, New Fashion
Illustration, and Mondofragile 2. Commercial clients include Papyrus, Un Dix Colors, Grove Department Stores, Yahoo Japan, Sony, and Max Factor. |
